Whether you're new to the sport or it's been a while since you've played, here's what you'll need for every round.
| | | | | | A Checklist of Essentials Every Golfer Must Have | Living in New York City isn't a convenient place for playing golf regularly. I don't own a car to get to courses outside the city, and it's hard to justify storing a bulky bag of clubs that I don't use often. I could rent both of these, but the money to do so is rarely worth the hassle. I miss the sport, though. My parents and grandparents are golfers, a family friend owned a course (where I drove a golf cart for the first time at probably a far too young age), and being on my high school team meant daily practices and frequent tournaments. Fortunately, though, I was able to spend some time recently with family in Colorado (thank you, Pfizer), and I secured a tee time for us. If you're like me and it's been a while since you've played, or you're new to the sport, here's my quick checklist of essentials for every round. Of course, you'll need a set of clubs and a bag. My ideal set includes a driver; 3- and 5-woods; two hybrids; 5-, 7-, and 9-irons; a putter; pitching wedge; and sand wedge. (If needed, you can get by with fewer clubs.) Other essentials include golf balls (pack plenty extra for the occasional stray shot) and golf tees, a glove, and a ball marker for the green. (I prefer ones that clip to my hat or my glove so that I don't lose them.) Beyond that, I also like to have a towel (for drying your clubs or ball) and an umbrella. You'll also need proper attire. For women, that can mean pants (not jeans), skorts, or (not too short) shorts, usually paired with a polo or sleeveless top. (Tip: My recent golf outfits are all Amazon finds—lots of stylish, affordable options there!) Golf shoes are nice to have, but not required. And don't forget your hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen! | Our editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products and services; you can learn more about our review process here.
